LOWER IMPACT DESIGN ON OUR MAVERICK AND BENT SKIS

Putting ideas into action, we’ve set out on a mission to understand and address the environmental impact of our  products. This includes creating a data-driven sustainability department with experts in carbon reduction, supply chain specialists, and more real-time performance feedback from Atomic freeride athletes like Chris Benchetler, Amie Engebretson, Aymar Navarro, and Sage Cattabriga-Alosa.

LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENTS DELIVER RELIABLE DATA

Beginning with a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in compliance with ISO14040 and ISO14044 standards, a rigorous and scientific process that examined the environmental impact of a ski from its creation to its eventual disposal, the investigation focused on multiple environment aspects, including the global warming potential of a ski. By tracing the carbon dioxide (CO2) impact throughout the ski's life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials to its end-of-life utilization, a clear picture of a ski's environmental impact emerged.

Empowered by this knowledge, our product designers went to work utilizing numerous iterations and innovative tools to develop prototypes that not only reduced a ski’s environmental impact but also improved its performance on the snow.

IMPROVING THE WAY FORWARD

These efforts have culminated in a new lower-impact design of our freeride skis, including the hard-charging Maverick 115 and Maverick 105, and the soulfully expressive Bent Chetler 120. The lower-impact design of these freeride skis uses more wood, less fiberglass, less Titanal, and less resin. As a result, we have eliminated over 24% of CO2 equivalent emissions from our new Maverick skis (GWP Raw Materials in comparison with the Maverick 100, 2022), and 13% in the Bent Chetler 120 (GWP Raw Materials in comparison with the Bent Chetler 120, 2022).
Recognizing this significant achievement in product advancement, Atomic has made the commitment to conduct LCAs on every product range we redesign. By embracing this approach, we ensure that each new product construction becomes an opportunity not only to enhance performance but to also reduce environmental impact.
